Superman Returns: The Videogame

Superman Returns: The Videogame

Publisher : Electronic Arts

Superman, as you might have guessed, has returned. And most impressive his return looks too. Players can now take on the role of Metropolis’s recently returned guardian to protect the city from a plethora of evil lurking on its streets (and, on occasion, in its skies). In the past, Superman games have been a tad on the awkward side. Not that we can put too much blame on the programmers, mind you. Making a bevy of powers that includes flight, super-strength, super-speed, heat vision, arctic breath, x-ray vision (and a bunch of others we can’t be bothered to list) work and play well is no mean feat. With the release of Superman Returns on the Xbox360, however, EA finally have a platform to work with that’s up to the task. Superman Returns offers 80 square metres of playable landscape for ‘Supes’ to get to grips with, and it’s littered with all kinds of nastiness to test your powers. And making use of the powers on offer is undeniably a huge part of the experience. EA haven’t skimped on the ’super’ front and offer a variety of creative ways to use your abilities. Within a couple of minutes of hitting start, you’re fighting fires and cooling off comets with your super-breath, then blasting meteors out of the sky with your heat vision. Further into the game, players can mix things up to find new ways to stop enemies and save lives, such as freezing a torrent of water spraying from a fire-hydrant and hurling it at the baddies with super-strength. The sheer range of what you can do with your powers is astounding. Oh, and did we mention the baddies? Well, yes. But we can’t help but mention them again. Expect - amongst others - Mongul (yellow-alien-warlord-type); Bizarro (demented-Superman-clone-guy); Metallo (giant-evil-robot-thingy); and of course the nefarious (yes, that’s right, nefarious) Lex Luthor to try and give you a headache.

The Godfather

The Godfather

Publisher : Electronic Arts

One of the few liberties developer Electronic Arts has taken with this long-awaited game smacks you in the chops right from the start. Al Pacino’s character Michael Corleone (the most important character in the movie after Don Vito Corleone) is not present. The Godfather puts you in the role of a character that did not feature in the film at all. With the packaging and all the hype surrounding the release of The Godfather, you would be wrong in believing it’s all so-o-o authentic. The Xbox 360 version of The Godfather has had numerous enhancements and additions made to the gameplay. There is an enhanced BlackHand Control combat system, where you can punch, kick, grab and even choke an adversary with a stranglehold. Other exclusive enhancements made to this version of The Godfather include racket truck heists, extortions, targeting and living world gameplay. Several 360-exclusive missions and contract hits, new venues, a new family compound and much more interaction with key characters are all new additions to The Godfather for the Xbox 360. The game begins with your character witnessing his father being gunned down and murdered by rival gangsters. You are then thrust forward nine years into the future to the wedding scene from the opening of the film (at last, something familiar) where your mother is asking Don Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando) to take you under his wing and offer you work. The Don sends his Capo, Luca Brasi to look after you and train you in the fine art of being a mobster. You are then taken to what EA call the ‘Mob Face’ part of the game, where you can customise how your character will look (face, hair and clothes etc.). The tools used in this section are very similar to those found in all EA Sports games. Now your character has taken shape, you begin as an unofficial enforcer for the Corleone family, which means your job is to muscle merchants into paying you protection money. Extorting businesses and taking over rackets is not all there is to the game, though. There are plenty of story missions to keep you occupied. Some missions are taken directly from the movie. You will have to drive the Don to the hospital after he is shot in the street, travel to Hollywood to re-enact the famous horse’s head scene, and plant the pistol for Michael Corleone to use to kill Salazzo, to name but a few. In addition to the characters, the city of New York has been carefully rendered in detail, and you can spot specific scenes from the film as you travel the streets of Little Italy, Brooklyn, Midtown, Hell’s Kitchen, and New Jersey. For the most part, the game has remained faithful to the legendary movie. Only after making a name for yourself will you move up the family ladder, starting from ‘Outsider’, and the game is completed when you become the Don of New York City, ruling over the other New York families (Tattaglia, Stracci, Cuneo and Barzini).

Championship Manager 2007

Championship Manager 2007

Publisher : Eidos

The best-selling football management simulation is back with Championship Manager 2007 (CM2007). Of course, this latest version in the Championship Manager series is the most extensive yet, and the 2007 version delivers more countries, leagues (including the introduction of English Conference North and South) and trophies than ever before. Player and club data in CM2007 is accurate up to the closing of the August 2006 transfer window. The CM series has always given the player total control over pretty much every area of being a manager of a football club. This can range from selecting the best possible team for an upcoming match to asking the board to expand the stadium to taking a training session. The game will have all the features you’d expect from a Champ Man game. However, the boys at Eidos have made numerous additions to CM2007. The game has a different look to its predecessor, with new skins, menu shortcuts and a dynamic side bar. International football management makes a welcome debut on Championship Manager 2007. Gamers can try and succeed where Sven Goran Eriksson failed with England at the 2006 World Cup. An innovative new Match Analysis Tool is present, which will reveal statistical information with regards to every footballer and every game, including: goals scored, runs made and shots/passes/tackles made or failed. Managers will now be able to praise and criticise players in a brand new team talks feature. It is now possible to give individual instructions to players pre-match or at half time. You can, if you want, even receive staff feedback on performances. There have also been various improvements made to transfers, negotiations, news, media and pre-match build up. The AI system used in the game has been greatly refined when compared to its predecessor. Championship Manager 2007 is probably the most fun you could have at pretending to be a football manager without wearing a sheepskin coat.
